Here are some of the course options available to you in Eastbourne.

TechResort

TechResort is a community-interest company located in the town centre of Eastbourne. They offer a variety of support and opportunities depending on your age:

  • One-to-one help for adults with digital skills at their shop in Cavendish Place

  • Weekly coding clubs within primary schools

  • Teens sessions at their base in Cavendish Place (all welcome)

  • Clubs for secondary-age pupils are being planned.

Secondary Schools

All KS3 students study some form of Computing, Computer Science or IT as part of the national curriculum. 

Schools offer KS4 students different options for their GCSE-level studies:

  • The Eastbourne Academy

    • Computer Science or Creative iMedia

    • Every KS3 student has an Apple iPad and KS4 students are issued with a Google Chromebook

  • The Turing School

    • Computing, Creative iMedia, or Product Design

    • Online and offline Enrichment Activities include Software Tutorials, Turing IT Training, and Turing G-Suite Certification.

  • Willingdon Community School

    • Computer Science or BTEC Digital Information Technology

  • St Catherine’s College

    • GCSE Computer Science or BTEC Digital Information Technology

    • An extra-curricular Coding Club is available for Year 7 students

  • The Cavendish School

    • GCSE Computer Science

  • Ratton School

    • GCSE Computer Science or BTEC Digital Information Technology

    • An extra-curricular Girls Who Code club is available for Years 7, 8 and 9 students

    • Enrichment Week 2022 offers Years 7, 8 and 9 students the chance to “Design an App”, solving a problem of their choice and programming robots.

  • Gildredge House

    • Creative iMedia or GCSE Computer Science

    • As Gildredge House has a Sixth Form, Years 12 and 13 students have the option to take Computer Science A Level or Cambridge Technical Introductory Diploma in IT.

Eastbourne College

Year 9 pupils at Eastbourne College are issued with iPads and introduced to Python and Swift. Pupils can choose to continue their studies in GCSE Computing and some complete an ECDL qualification in Sixth Form.

Beyond the classroom, pupils are encouraged to participate in the Informatics Olympiad, a programming challenge. Introductory programming is offered as part of a Year 9 activities programme and there is a coding club for pupils to code their own projects or make and control a robot using C, Python or Swift. East Sussex College

East Sussex College offers a variety of post-16 education courses at its Eastbourne Campus:

  • Creative Media Production and Technology Level 2 for creative students interested in the media and who like working practically. Students develop a range of media production skills including video production, audio production and interactive print production. They also learn how to analyse professional media products.

  • Creative Media Production and Technology Level 3 is for students starting their journey as a media professional with intensive production-based education across TV & film, journalism, graphic design and radio.

  • Digital T Level for students looking for a work-focused alternative to A Levels. They offer new routes to employment or further learning for young people looking to begin a career in the digital sector.

  • Game Art and Animation Level 3 is a new course designed to teach cutting edge skill sets to those looking to pursue a future in the fast-moving Digital Technologies sector. The main areas of study include Experimental image making, visual effects, asset creation and concept art. Students also investigate design for interactivity, tablets, apps, installations and expanded cinema, including work on AR and VR with VFX.

  • Games Development Level 3 is the perfect start for a career in the games industry, analysing what makes games fun to play and challenging for the player. Students develop visual and technical skills for professional approaches to the subject.

  • IT: Computing and Digital Technologies Diploma Level 2 gives students the skills needed for the creative and digital industries. The course covers the design and development of games, mobile apps, websites, and networks, as well as setting up computer systems.

  • Media Studies A Level looks at what media tells us about the world. Students explore culturally significant theoretical perspectives in analytical writing and then demonstrate their understanding in a creative portfolio, using industry specialist software to construct a range of print, AV and online forms. It’s a good route into journalism, PR, Marketing or Communications.

For adults, the Eastbourne campus also provides numerous courses which can be completed alongside work commitments, such as:

  • Digital Skills for Work Level 2 (Online, free). This course improves your digital skills for work, and learners will discover how to apply digital skills in a business situation and use digital resources to facilitate your career progression.

  • IT for Beginners. This is perfect if you know nothing about computers or IT and want to know the basics, including switching the computer on and off, programmes like Word, toolbars, menus, icons and IT jargon (10-week course).

  • Visually Impaired Level 1, 2 and 3 IT Users Certificates. These are practical, hands-on courses to learn and/or improve basic IT skills across a range of software packages using assistive software and hardware. These 35-week courses are taught one-to-one.

East Sussex Libraries

The IT for You team at East Sussex Libraries offers free one-to-one support on everyday computer skills at your local library. You can learn to use email, the internet, how to stay safe online, how to search and apply for work, how to download and use the NHS app, keep in touch with friends and family online, and discover Microsoft Office. 

IT for You Together is an additional weekly group session at Eastbourne Library.

Additionally, children aged 8-13 years old should look out for after school Code Clubs at their local libraries. 

Coffee Pot Computing

Coffee Pot Computing is a voluntary organisation offering support to residents of Eastbourne aged 50+ get to grips with their technology; absolute beginners are their speciality. They provide one-to-one support in a warm and friendly environment. They ask for a £3 donation per session.

Drop in for any session on Wednesday mornings from 10am to 12 noon at Leaf Hall, 51 Seaside, Eastbourne.

Creative Process Digital

Creative Process offers a free Digital Accelerator diploma (worth £2600) that helps launch participants into the successful future they have always dreamed of. Learn how to build your own website, create an online portfolio, and practice using design and marketing software including Wix, Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator. A similar free Video Accelerator course is also available.
