August 2022 Roundup: Diversity in tech & upcoming events 📆

By Sarah Cronk

The heatwave is over and the planes and the visitors have gone - phew! But wasn't it fantastic to see Eastbourne in all of its glory?

What’s on?

Summer may be on its way out, but the bank holiday is still to come! There are loads of events coming up over the next few weeks to look forward to...

  • Eastbourne Vintage Festival is back this bank holiday weekend in Gildredge Park with a Victorian funfair, live music and entertainment, and an open-air cinema on the Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights

  • The Feastival, a family food, music & culture festival, also runs this bank holiday weekend in Hampden Park

  • Eastbourne Steampunk Festival takes place on the Wish Tower Slopes on 3rd/4th September

  • Wyntercon IX, a family-friendly comic-con style event, returns to the Winter Gardens on 10th/11th September

Whoever said there was nothing to do in Eastbourne?!

And If industry-specific events are your thing...

And last but not least, add Thursday 20th October to your calendars for our very own Chalk event which will take place at FOUNDRY! More details to follow.

A Chat With: Grace Prior at Diverse Sussex

This month, Chalk spoke to Grace Prior, Programme Director at Silicon Brighton who led the Diverse Sussex initiative. Diversity, equity and inclusion have always been a passion and priority of Grace’s, so we caught up with her to find out about how this applies to the digital sector.

In our interview, we discovered...

📝 ...what education providers can do to try to bridge the DEI gap for young people

📈 ...how you can take small steps to make a difference

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 ...what advice Grace would give to those in one of the underrepresented groups

Check out Grace’s interview for more on Diverse Sussex's work and plans for the future.

Silicon Brighton and Diverse Sussex are hosting dual Paralympian and England's most capped and decorated blind football player, Darren Harris, at "Unblind the Mind" on Thursday 22nd September in Brighton.
